If You Consider That You Cannot Afford Medical Insurance Then You Are In For A Pleasant Surprise.
A staggering one out of five adult Americans feel that they are not able to afford adequate health care according to the latest information released by the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia. So, are you one of the forty million people who are not able to sleep comfortably in their beds at night because of the fear of not being able to pay for the cost of medical treatment should you have an illness or accident? Perhaps more to the point, have you got to be one of the forty million?
The report of the CDC which was put out in 2007 and examined health care in the United States looked in some detail at various aspects of health care and revealed that:
1. 10% of people cannot currently afford the cost of prescription medicines.
2. 10% of people put off having medical treatment because of the cost.
3. As many as nearly 1 out of 3 young people aged between 18 and 24 do not have a usual source of medical treatment or health care insurance.
4. 10% of people aged between 45 and 64 do not have a usual source of medical treatment and about half of these people have hypertension, a major heart problem or diabetes.
5. Twenty percent of individuals under 65 years of age are not insured for at least part of each year, with the majority of these having no insurance throughout the 12 month period.
A lot of people are fortunate enough to receive health insurance cover through schemes operated by their employer, although rising costs are forcing a growing number of employers to cut back on their employee health care plans or to drop them altogether. There are however also many millions of people who cannot get cover from their employer and who must make their own arrangements. It is for this latter group that health care insurance is often considered to be simply too expensive.
So are you right to dismiss the idea of purchasing medical insurance merely because you believe that it is too expensive? Health insurance plans come in all shapes and sizes and, in spite of the fact that a traditional fee-for-service plan can be expensive, there are a number of less expensive options.
In simple terms health insurance falls into roughly two categories comprising disability plans and medical expense plans. The first compensates you for your lost income if you are no longer able to work because of disability while the latter covers you for the cost of medical treatment arising out of injury or accident.
Each of these types of health insurance can be purchased as a single plan or separately and separate policies can again be broken down to cover particular areas such as accident coverage, hospital care, major medical expenses, basic medical expenses and more.
As if this were not enough, cover can now be offered by not simply traditional insurance companies, but also by various group organizations, companies such as Blue Cross Blue Shield, health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations, each of which can provide a range of policies with payment options that suit more or less any budget.
If you have been frightened by the thought that you simply cannot afford health insurance then think again. You may not be able to afford a comprehensive plan covering all eventualities but it is a sure bet that you will be able to find a plan which will give you at least enough coverage to provide you with some peace of mind.
